8 Great Summer Activities in Colorado | Fun Outdoor Rocky Mountain Activities To Cool Down

Browns Canyon Rafting Colorado Rafting Blog Best Whitewater Rafting in Colorado

Colorado has more than its fair share of weather. From hundreds of inches of snow in the winter months to temperatures that eclipse one hundred degrees in the summer, there is something to do in every season whether it’s hot or cold. This post examines seven fun activities to do when it’s hot in Colorado. Cool off with some of these awesome outdoor summer activities!

What are Some Fun Outdoor Activities to do When it’s Hot?

The Summer days in Colorado seem to get hotter and hotter every year. Hot conditions can lead to Colorado residents looking for a reprieve from the heat.

Some of the best outdoor activities in the Summer months include:

Hiking at Elevation

Hiking at higher elevations is much cooler compared to hiking at lower elevations. A general rule of thumb is it drops 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit for every 1,000 feet of vertical incline.

This means that if it’s 100 degrees in Denver (5,280 ft) it will be nearly twenty seven degrees cooler, or 73 °(F) in Leadville (10,151 ft). This sizable difference in elevations makes it much cooler for those in higher elevations compared to lower elevations.

Leadville is just off I-70 and is the highest incorporated city in North America.  The largest city by population in Lake County, CO – Leadville boasts some of the best restaurants, breweries and hotels in the county.

Rafting in the Rockies

Not far from Leadville lies the mountain town of Buena Vista, CO. The Arkansas River rips through the Rocky Mountains and offers spectacular views and adventures of a few fourteeners (14,000+ ft peaks).

Raft the Arkansas River with great half day, full day and overnight rafting trips. Whitewater sections in Buena Vista, CO vary from novice to expert and is fun for the whole family across different age groups!

Tubing in One of the Many Colorado Rivers

There are plenty of tubing options near Denver. Adventurers can hit up the South Platte River near Downtown Denver or go to one of the most exciting whitewater parks in the country in Salida.

Tubing is a great activity in the summertime. Experienced tubers and river goers will remember to pack their essentials in dry bags so that their electronics and valuables are safe and dry during the river ride!

Grab a few tasty beers, some lunch and pack everything in when you head out and tubing is a fantastic Summer activity to stay cool!!

Lake and River Kayaking

Single kayaks, Double kayaks – whatever the kayak size – take a kayak out on a Colorado lake or river.

Local raft outfitters offer guided tours for kayakers on the Arkansas River. This is a great option if you don’t already have all the necessary kayaking gear or are just looking for a great Summer adventure.

Cool off for a few hours or the day with a kayak adventure this Summer!

best-things-to-do-this-summer-in-colorado

SUP – Stand Up Paddleboarding in Colorado

Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP), is a great anaerobic and aerobic exercise that engages the whole body and requires great core strength. Stand up paddleboards are available at many rivers and lakes across the country.

River stand up paddleboarding is much more difficult compared to the more calm water of a lake. Individuals that chose to stand up paddleboard in a river should wear the proper equipment including a vest, a helmet, floatable keyrings and drybags. Frequently, this equipment is available through a local whitewater rafting guide.

Camping in Colorado

Long days, starry nights and camp fires. Beat the heat this summer by camping at elevation next to a body of water. There are a plethora of camping options in Colorado and individuals should follow camping guidelines and follow proper food storage to avoid local fauna attracted to any food items. Colorado is bear country and encountering a brown bear in close proximity can be very dangerous.

Be sure to carry bear spray, and safely store your food in proper equipment.

Camping provides a recharge from the hustle and bustle of city life. Slow down, cook food by the fire and make some lifelong memories with the best people in your life.

Go Exploring in Colorado Caves

Elevation can cool you off, waterways and lakes can too, but what’s cooler than all of them – caves that’s who!

The average temperature of caves in Colorado range from low to mid 50’s, caves offer a needed reprieve for spelunkers that truly want to beat the heat.

Cave of the Winds is located just outside of Colorado Springs and offers a break from the “normal” outdoor activities.

Road Trip Through The Rockies

Can’t decide what cool off activities you want to do this Summer? Why not pick a few, grab some buds and hit the road for a long weekend road trip!

Camping provides some of the most affordable summer trips out there where one can engage in numerous activities including hiking, fishing, tubing and other outdoor activities.

A great road trip from Colorado Springs involves stopping at the Cave of the Winds, going on an overnight rafting trip and ending it with a ducky trip down the Arkansas River!

Beginner Whitewater Rafting Trips in Colorado – Rocky Mountain Rafting Trips

Browns Canyon Rafting Colorado Rafting Blog Best Whitewater Rafting in Colorado

The Rocky Mountains provide seriously fun year round adventures. Many think of the Rocky Mountains as a wintertime destination, but the region provides amazing year round activities for any beginner whitewater rafter or seasoned vet alike.

In the warmer months in Colorado, the snow of the Rockies melt and give way to outdoor water adventures of a different type. Whitewater rafting is a fun and exciting outdoor activity that is easily accessible in the Rockies. The region offers amazing beginner whitewater rafting trips for all ages, groups and levels of experience.

The higher the class of rapid, the more difficult the stretch of river. Generally speaking rapids that are class I – III are considered beginner to intermediate. Below we examine Class I, Class II and Class III rapids. Class I & Class II rapids are frequently included in beginner whitewater rafting trips – while Class III rapids may also be included in portions.

Beginner Whitewater Rafting Content:

What are Class I Rapids?

Class I rapids are the calmest level of rapids. These smooth rapids are easy with light and involve minimal fast water and rapids. Clear passages are frequent in this class that involve gentle moving water, banks and some small turns.

What are Class II Rapids?

Class II sections involve average rapids that are moderate and offer regular waves. Rocks and maneuverability occur and small waves may be encountered. Class II rapids are novice – intermediate in difficulty but are safe for the whole family and provide the moving water that creates fun and memorable experiences!

What are Class III Rapids?

Class III rapids are intermediate in nature. These rapids provide a moderate level of difficulty that include moderate to larger waves and some eddies. Rafters must also navigate through rocks and other obstacles that are present in the water.

What Whitewater Rafting Trip is Right For My Family?

Many beginner whitewater rafting trips include Class I – Class III rapids. Frequently a beginner rafting trip will include sections that include Class I, Class II and potentially Class III rapids. These introductory and family friendly trips are appropriate for those 4 and older. Intermediate rapids have a minimum age of 7 and older.

If you are unsure what rafting trip is appropriate for you or your rafting group, review the different types of trips offered and contact us if you have any questions.

Families that have children between the ages of 4 and 7 may find the family float as an ideal trip for your party.

Families with children that have younger children that are older than 7 are likely suitable for either a beginner or an intermediate trip. Many intermediate trips have sections that involve calmer water and rapids.

When is the Best Time to Raft in Colorado?

Browns Canyon Rafting Colorado Rafting Blog Best Whitewater Rafting in Colorado

The Spring and Summer months are generally considered the best time to raft in Colorado. The hotter seasons in Colorado offer enjoyable nature and provide perfect conditions for whitewater rafting.

Spring Through End Of Summer

The hottest months of the year offer the ideal conditions for whitewater rafting in Colorado. In much of the Continental United States, May – Late August are the ideal times of year where the snowpack from the mountains melt and flow to the nearby streams, rivers and waterways.

Can I Ski, Snowboard & Raft in the Same Month in Colorado?

In Colorado things that are impossible in other countries and states are totally doable. Visitors and residents of the Rocky Mountain State have the ability and opportunity to enjoy the slopes of World class mountains and whitewater raft. This can be done in the same day for adventurous individuals!

Rip through a canyon on your snowboard or skis and an amazing whitewater rafting experience is only sixty miles away from one another. The optimal time to ski, snowboard and raft in the same month is in late April through early to mid May!

what-month-is-best-for-whitewater-rafting

Ski & Raft in Late April & Early May in Colorado!

Early May in Colorado is a transitory part of the year. A few weeks out of the year offer a special overlap of the winter and summer seasons where water and snow activities are available within a ninety minute drive of one another.

Locals and tourists in the Rocky Mountains alike can enjoy the adrenaline rush and outdoor activities of both awesome outdoor activities.

The few weeks at the end of April and early May can offer a taste of seasonal opposites. Many winter resorts are still in operation from the winter season, while rafting outfits are in the early part of the rafting season. Enjoy the picturesque Rocky Mountains with a trip to the Continental Divide during late April – Early May.

When are Rivers the Highest for Whitewater Rafting?

Cubic feet per second is the unit of measurement allotted for measuring the water level in rivers. The biggest whitewater rapids in the Rockies tend to occur in late June through August.

If the previous winter provides more precipitation than average, the rapids the following Summer tend to be larger in nature. Conversely, if the winter provides a less than average amount of snowfall, the whitewater tends to be slightly smaller when compared to an average winter.

How Does Snowfall Impact Rafting Season?

Generally speaking, the more snowfall in the winter and spring, the larger the flow of the river. After a heavy snow year, the rapids can peak and the rapids are larger relative to a sub-par snowfall year.

Traveling Through The Rockies

The Rockies are the largest mountain range in the Continental United States and should be treated with respect and approached with caution and preparation. Ensure that you are in an AWD, 4WD or a 4×4 vehicle and/or are carrying chains in your vehicle. Weather and road conditions can change quickly and snow can fall at high altitudes even in the Summer months.

While the summer seasons tend to be sunny and can get very hot and humid in nature, precipitation in the form of snow can fall at higher elevations. Err on the side of caution and ride in a car built for the mountains or carry chains. While snow in the summer Months is rare it can occur. It’s best to enjoy the scenic drive in a safe manner.

Top 3 Arkansas River Rafting Trips

Browns Canyon Rafting Colorado Rafting Blog Best Whitewater Rafting in Colorado
Buena Vista rafting season is here! The sun is shining, the birds are chirping and the snow is melting, yay Spring!  The rivers are flowing and so is Arkansas River rafting. Colorado’s rafting season is just around the corner and we are excited here at Browns Canyon Rafting. It is that time of year when love is in the air, bees are buzzing, and raft guides are dreaming of whitewater, hopefully you are too. May is a great time to come rafting and we have some great trips to choose from! When I was seven years old I went on my first rafting trip ever, it was an overnight through Browns Canyon. Much has changed in the past 27 years; Y2K has come and gone, the internet has changed the way we live life from day to day and Browns Canyon is a National Monument! Something that hasn’t changed is the beauty, serenity and amazing whitewater the Arkansas River has to offer. Below are my favorite three Arkansas River rafting trips, in no particular order. There are so many great sections on the Arkansas River that it is hard to narrow my favorites down, but if I must I must.

Arkansas River Rafting, Colorado Rafting TripsNumbers Half Day

The Numbers half day trip is one of my favorites! The Numbers is widely considered just about the best class IV run in Colorado. The rapids are named one through seven with some half’s in-between, real original names I know. Miners in the late 1800’s named these rapids to avoid crossing the Arkansas River at these spots. Original names or not, these rapids pack a punch and are great at any water level. This is probably the most continuous stretch of whitewater on the Arkansas River and is sooooo much fun.

Browns Canyon National Monument, Arkansas River Rafting Browns Canyon Full Day

As I mentioned before Browns Canyon was my first rafting trip when I was seven. I loved it so much that I found myself back here years later guiding this stretch, sharing my passion for nature, whitewater and the river lifestyle with others. Our Browns Canyon National Monument Full Day trip is my favorite day trip on the Arkansas River and possibly in the world. The beauty of Browns Canyon is unbelievable with it’s large granite boulder fields and views of the many fourteen thousand foot peaks surrounding the canyon. The whitewater is great too! Rafting through Browns Canyon you will travel about 16 miles of fun splashy class III rapids. It is the perfect combination of fun rapids with enough time in-between to enjoy all of the breath taking views! Great for the whole family.

Numbers/Browns Canyon Multi-Day Wilderness Trip

Since my first overnight rafting trip I have gone on countless more making friends and memories along the way. Overnight rafting trips are hands down the best way to enjoy the river, friends and family, in my opinion. Camping in Browns Canyon National Monument is an unforgettable experience. My favorite overnight Arkansas River rafting trip is The Numbers and Browns Canyon multi-day. It is the best of both worlds. You start your adventure with the exciting and continuous Numbers section on day one and continue to float downstream to Browns Canyon National Monument where you camp in the secluded wilderness of Browns Canyon. On the second day you will continue your adventure downstream through the rest of Browns Canyon enjoying the majestic views and fun whitewater along the way. Eat well, have fun and relax; these are the important things on any overnight whitewater rafting trip. Thinking and writing about all this Buena Vista white water rafting has gotten me all excited, I think I will head to the river right now! I hope that I can share some memories with you starting in a few short weeks, see you on the river!

2015 Great water year for the Arkansas River

This year has turned into a great water year for the Arkansas River. A great water year means a great rafting year!
The rafting season has kicked off and the flows have been great with a slow melt off leaving plenty of snow for water later in the season. We have been rafting on a fun friendly water level of around 1000 cfs (cubic feet per second) this last week. This level is perfect for big splashes, smiles and memories to last a lifetime.
With this snowpack we should have great whitewater rafting all the way through August! Whether you live in Colorado or are out in Colorado for a vacation, this year is a great year to get out and get wet. Plan your vacation or stay-cation and go whitewater rafting. Browns Canyon Rafting offers a variety of trips whether you are looking for a fun family friendly trip or if you are looking for the extreme adrenaline pumping outing, and everything in between.
When choosing a trip assess your groups ability levels and pick accordingly. If you ever have questions or would like help choosing the right trip for your group feel free to call us at 719 275-2890 and our helpful adventure agents would love to assist you.

Browns Canyon Becomes a National Monument

President Obama designated Browns Canyon a National Monument on February 19th 2015. There is approximately 21,500 acres of rugged mountains, beautiful vistas, and colorful rock outcrops in the Browns Canyon National Monument designation. This new designation protect the area from new development such logging roads, permanent structures, dams, and new mining and mineral leasing claims preserving this beautiful land for future generations.
“This designation will provide permanent protection that is long overdue for this incredible area,” Executive Director of Friends of Browns Canyon, Keith Baker, said. “Residents and visitors to Chaffee County have always understood that Browns Canyon is a national treasure. The national monument designation is supported by hunters and anglers, businesses and conservation groups, veterans and youth groups.”
Browns Canyon is located south of Buena Vista, Colorado and is a mecca for outdoor activities. The Arkansas River flows directly through Browns Canyon and offers world class whitewater rafting and kayaking. There is a 102 mile section of the Arkansas River, including the Browns Canyon National Monument section, that has achieved the greatest title wildlife officials have to offer for fisheries: “Gold Medal” water. Gold Medal Waters are considered the highest quality cold-water habitats accessible to the public and offer the greatest potential for trophy trout fishing. There are public campsites throughout the canyon that can be accessed by rafts on overnight rafting trips and other camp sites that can be accessed via vehicles at Hecla Junction or Ruby Mountain. Camping within the canyon is an unforgettable secluded wilderness experience. If you are not a water person there are plenty of land activities to partake in such as rock climbing, hiking or mountain biking.
Here at Browns Canyon Rafting we are super excited about the upcoming season. It means a lot in our community to see Browns Canyon become a National Monument and we hope to share this protected wilderness with you and future generations through our Buena Vista rafting trips.

Browns Canyon Rafting Gone East

Browns Canyon Rafting Colorado Rafting Blog Best Whitewater Rafting in Colorado

Every year around Labor Day, Buena Vista river rafting comes to a close.  This year was a great season with exceptional water, guests, friends, and family.  Just because Colorado’s rafting season has come to a close doesn’t mean rafting is done for the year.  At the end of our season comes the great migration of raft guides to the east to paddle on the Gauley River in West Virginia.  Many Browns Canyon Rafting employees find themselves heading east joining other guides from around the country and world to partake in a six week dam released season on the Gauley River.  Some go to work, others go to play, everyone goes for the river.  This is a time to see old friends, make new ones, and enjoy life.
Gauley season is comprised of six weekends starting the week after Labor Day.  It is a large volume fun class V river with many features to play on and surf.  There is the upper (my favorite) and the lower; both a great time.  During mid week there is still fun to be had with rafting on the New River or heading to Maryland to raft on the Youghiogheny (or Yak).
This past Gauley season was no exception.  Great people and great times.  It has been about two weeks since the final release on the Gauley River for this season and I can’t wait until next year.  I am back in Colorado awaiting the rapidly approaching ski season; dreaming of powder and whitewater.
See you on the water this Spring!

Browns Canyon Rafting Colorado Rafting Blog Best Whitewater Rafting in Colorado

Thanks everyone for such a great rafting season!  Browns Canyon Rafting had a wonderful 2014 season all around.  Our staff couldn’t be better, the water levels were great, and we had tons of happy customers.

The Arkansas River had a great snow year for 2014 and we are looking forward to the 2015 Buena Vista white water rafting season.  It is a little sad not seeing all of our great co-workers every day but that is how the seasons flow.  It will be a great day next spring when everyone converges back together to live, work, and have fun on the Arkansas River again.
