Read MoreWhat Makes The Numbers Different from Browns Canyon?
Two of the most talked-about rafting sections on the Arkansas River sit just minutes apart, both launching from our Buena Vista outpost — yet they deliver completely different days on the water. If you’re weighing a Browns Canyon half-day trip against a Numbers half-day trip, this guide breaks down exactly how they differ so you can pick the run that fits your group.
At Browns Canyon Rafting, we run both sections all season long, and the question we hear most often is simple: which one is right for me? Here’s how to decide.
The Short Answer
Browns Canyon is the classic, do-it-all trip — splashy, scenic, and welcoming to just about everyone. The Numbers is the adrenaline run — steeper, faster, and built for people who want nonstop whitewater. One is a scenic adventure with great rapids; the other is a rapid-after-rapid workout with scenery in between.
Rapid Class: Fun vs. Full-On
This is the biggest difference between the two.
Browns Canyon
The Browns Canyon section runs through Browns Canyon National Monument and features Class III to low Class IV rapids with named drops like Pinball, Zoom Flume, and Big Drop. There’s real excitement here, but the rapids are spaced out — you get pockets of splashy whitewater followed by calmer stretches to catch your breath, soak in the granite canyon walls, and get to know your guide.
The Numbers
The Numbers is a different animal. It’s a Class IV, intermediate-to-advanced section with seven major numbered rapids (one through seven) plus plenty of smaller ones packed in between. This stretch is famously continuous — there isn’t much downtime, so you’re paddling hard and reacting fast from start to finish. It’s one of the best sections in Colorado if you want a fun, action-packed, non-stop ride.
Who Each Trip Is Built For
Browns Canyon is for almost everyone.
First-time rafters, families, mixed-ability groups, and seasoned paddlers all have a great time here. The minimum age is 6 years old (and 50 lbs), which makes it the go-to choice when you’ve got kids or a wide range of comfort levels in your group.
The Numbers is for thrill-seekers.
It’s ideal for experienced rafters or adventurous first-timers who are physically fit and genuinely ready to paddle. The recommended minimum age is 15, and everyone in the boat should be prepared for a demanding, high-energy run. If your group is chasing adrenaline — think bachelor parties, friend crews, and paddlers who want to conquer something bigger — this is your section.

Notice that Browns Canyon actually covers more river miles (about 10 vs. 6), but The Numbers packs more intensity into a shorter, steeper stretch. More miles doesn’t mean more thrills here — it’s the gradient and the density of rapids that set The Numbers apart.
Scenery: Two Kinds of Beautiful
Both trips are stunning, just in different ways.
Browns Canyon winds through the protected Browns Canyon National Monument, with towering granite cliffs, unique rock formations, wide-open canyon views, and a good chance of spotting wildlife along the banks. Because the pace eases up between rapids, you actually have time to look around and take it all in.
The Numbers delivers majestic views of the Collegiate Peaks and the Mosquito mountain range just north of Buena Vista — but you’ll be catching those views between paddle strokes. The scenery is a gorgeous backdrop to what is, first and foremost, a whitewater adventure.
What’s Included on Both Trips
Whichever section you choose, you’re covered. Both half-day trips include a professional, certified river guide, a personal flotation device and helmet, dry bag use, and roundtrip shuttle from our Buena Vista outpost. The Numbers also includes a free wetsuit package — wetsuit, splash top, and booties — since that section runs earlier in the season when the water is colder. For both trips, plan to arrive 30 minutes early, wear quick-dry clothing and secure footwear (no flip-flops), and bring sunglasses with a strap plus sunscreen.
So, Which One Should You Book?
Choose Browns Canyon if you want the most well-rounded Arkansas River experience, you’re bringing kids or a mixed group, it’s your first time rafting, or you want great rapids and time to enjoy the scenery. It’s popular for a reason — widely considered one of the best all-around rafting sections in Colorado.
Choose The Numbers if you’re after nonstop Class IV action, everyone in your group is 15+ and physically ready to paddle hard, and scenery-with-a-side-of-adrenaline isn’t enough — you want the adrenaline to be the trip.
