Low Water, Big Adventure: Exploring Browns Canyon by Ducky
Colorado’s rivers are always changing. Snowpack, runoff, summer temperatures, and seasonal conditions all play a role in what the Arkansas River looks like from one year—or even one week—to the next. This season, water levels through Browns Canyon are lower than what many paddlers may have experienced in past years.
But lower water doesn’t mean the adventure disappears. It simply creates a different way to experience the river.
At Browns Canyon Rafting, one of our favorite ways to make the most of lower-water conditions is with duckies. These small inflatable kayaks put you closer to the river and give you a more hands-on paddling experience as you make your way through one of Colorado’s most iconic stretches of water.
What Exactly Is a Ducky?
A ducky is an inflatable kayak designed for paddling rivers and whitewater. Unlike a traditional multi-person raft, a ducky is smaller and typically paddled by one or two people.
That smaller size creates a completely different experience.
Instead of being one paddler among a larger rafting crew, you’re much more involved in every turn, wave, and stretch of moving water. You’ll paddle, maneuver, and work your way down the river while experiencing Browns Canyon from just inches above the water.
For people who have rafted before, duckies offer an entirely new perspective. And for those looking for an active Colorado adventure, they’re a great introduction to a more individual style of river paddling.
Why Duckies Work So Well During Lower Water
When river levels drop, the Arkansas River changes. Channels become more defined, rocks and river features become more noticeable, and the route through the canyon can feel more technical and interactive.
That’s where duckies really shine.
Their smaller size allows them to move through sections of the river differently than a larger raft. Paddlers can navigate narrower channels and experience river features up close while still enjoying the incredible setting that makes Browns Canyon such a popular Colorado rafting destination.
More Hands-On Than Traditional Rafting
One of the biggest reasons people love duckies is simple: you get to do more.
Traditional rafting is already an interactive adventure, but duckies take that participation to another level. Every paddle stroke matters. You feel the movement of the current beneath you and respond directly to what the river is doing.
You may find yourself maneuvering around exposed rocks, catching small waves, following channels through the river, and constantly adjusting your position as the landscape changes around you.
There’s something incredibly satisfying about looking back at a stretch of river and knowing you paddled your own craft through it.
A Front-Row Seat to Browns Canyon
Browns Canyon is about much more than whitewater.
The river runs through Browns Canyon National Monument, where towering granite formations, rugged Colorado terrain, open skies, and mountain scenery surround the Arkansas River.
A ducky puts you right in the middle of it.
Because you’re sitting lower and closer to the water, the canyon can feel even bigger around you. Granite walls rise above the river while the current carries you through a landscape that has been shaped by water for thousands of years.
It’s one of those Colorado experiences that is difficult to appreciate from a road or hiking trail. From the river, you get an entirely different view.
A Great Option for Returning Rafters
If you’ve already rafted Browns Canyon in a traditional raft, this may be the perfect year to see it differently.
A ducky changes your relationship with the river. Familiar sections look different from a smaller craft. Features you may barely remember from a previous rafting trip suddenly become something you actively paddle through.
That makes duckies especially appealing for guests who love Colorado rafting but want to try something new.
You can return to the same beautiful stretch of the Arkansas River and still walk away with an entirely different experience.
Make the Most of Colorado’s Late-Summer River Season
There’s still plenty to love about being on the Arkansas River later in the season. Warm Colorado days, incredible canyon views, mountain scenery, and time spent outside make a day on the river hard to beat.
And when water levels are lower, the answer isn’t necessarily to stay off the river.
Sometimes, it’s simply time to change the boat.
Duckies let us adapt to what the Arkansas River is giving us and continue enjoying the twists, turns, scenery, and excitement of Browns Canyon.
Low water can still mean a big Colorado adventure.
