Boulder Rafting FAQs
Rafting season near Boulder, CO generally runs from May through early September, when melting snow from the mountains keeps the rivers flowing strong. The most intense whitewater typically peaks in early June, delivering action-packed rapids and scenic views. For those who prefer a slightly calmer experience, July and August still offer plenty of fun on the water with steady flows. The Arkansas River benefits from scheduled water releases through August 15th, helping to maintain ideal rafting conditions. After mid-August, the river shifts to its natural flow—perfect for a more laid-back float.
Located just a short drive from Boulder, the Arkansas River is a premier destination for whitewater rafting, offering a mix of exciting rapids and breathtaking scenery. One of the most iconic sections is Browns Canyon—a designated national monument—featuring thrilling Class III rapids surrounded by spectacular canyon views. It’s a favorite for both first-timers and seasoned adventurers. If you’re looking for a more adrenaline-filled challenge, The Numbers delivers with its Class IV rapids and fast-paced, continuous whitewater. Whether you’re in it for the scenery or the splash, both options promise an unforgettable experience.
Rafting near Boulder has minimum age requirements that vary based on the river section, water levels, and specific qualifications. For the Family Float section, we suggest children aged 4 and up. For Browns Canyon, the minimum age is 7 years, and for The Numbers, it’s 14 years. If your child is younger than the recommended age for a section, feel free to contact us. We can discuss the current water levels and help recommend the best rafting options for your group.
We recommend wearing quick-drying clothing, water shoes or sandals with straps, sunscreen, and sunglasses with a strap for your trip. Synthetic or wool layers, like leggings and long-sleeve synthetic shirts, offer both sun protection and extra warmth on cooler days. For early season rafting, when the weather can be cooler, we provide wetsuits, splash tops (river rain jackets), and booties in a variety of sizes. If you forget anything, or need a souvenir, our retail shop has sunscreen, sunglass straps, synthetic shirts, t-shirts, and more. Please try to avoid wearing cotton on the river, as it can retain moisture and make you feel colder.
We offer rafting trips perfect for beginners, with sections featuring Class II and III rapids that offer an exciting experience without being too challenging, all within a short distance from Boulder. If you’re seeking thrilling yet manageable Class III rapids, I highly recommend Browns Canyon—it offers a great mix of fun rapids and breathtaking views. For families with children under 7 or those looking for a more leisurely outing, our Family Float is ideal, allowing you to relax and take in the stunning scenery.
Our trip prices depend on the length and section you select. Feel free to give us a call or check our website to find the exact price for the trip you’re interested in. Prices begin at $106 per person. For groups of 10 or more, please reach out to us for information on available group discounts.
Browns Canyon Rafting is located in Buena Vista, Colorado approximately 2.5 hours drive from Boulder.
