Summit County Rafting FAQs
The best time to go rafting in Summit County, CO typically runs from May through early September. This period coincides with the spring snowmelt, filling the rivers with plenty of water for exciting rafting adventures. Water levels are usually at their peak in early June, offering thrilling rapids and scenic views. If you prefer milder conditions with still enjoyable rafting, July and August are also great months. The Arkansas River receives water releases until August 15th, keeping the river at a fun medium flow. After the 15th, the river returns to its natural flow.
Near Summit County, some of the best whitewater rafting can be found on the Arkansas River. Known for its thrilling rapids and stunning scenery, the Arkansas River is an iconic and popular destination for rafting enthusiasts. The most famous section for rafting is Browns Canyon, which features exhilarating Class III rapids set amidst breathtaking canyon landscapes and rafting through a national monument. Browns Canyon offers a challenge for experienced rafters while still being forgiving enough for first-timers. If you’re seeking a slightly more intense experience, The Numbers is a great option, offering challenging Class IV rapids and continuous whitewater. Both options provide unforgettable experiences and lasting memories.
Yes, there is a minimum age requirement for rafting near Summit County, which can vary depending on the river section, water levels, and individual qualifications. For the Family Float section, we recommend 4 years old and up. For Browns Canyon, the recommended minimum age is 7 years old, and for The Numbers, the recommended minimum age is 14. If your children are below the recommended ages for each section, please give us a call, and we can discuss water levels and the most appropriate sections for your group.
We recommend wearing quick-drying clothing, water shoes or sandals with straps, sunscreen, and sunglasses with a strap. Synthetic or wool layers are also great for sun protection and/or extra warmth on cooler days, such as leggings and long-sleeve synthetic shirts. For early season trips when the weather may be cooler, we offer wetsuits, splash tops (river rain jackets), and booties in various sizes. Our retail shop has everything you might need, including sunscreen, sunglass straps, synthetic shirts, t-shirts, and more—perfect for anything you might have forgotten or as a souvenir to take home. Please avoid wearing cotton on the river whenever possible.
Yes, we offer rafting trips suitable for beginners, including sections with Class II and III rapids that provide an exciting experience without being overly challenging, all within a reasonable distance from Summit County. If you’re looking for fun Class III rapids that aren’t too intense, I recommend Browns Canyon—it’s the perfect blend of thrilling rapids and stunning scenery.
