How Geology Has Shaped the Ecology and Human Story of Browns Canyon
Come spend a day with Zack, our resident naturalist and senior guide, on an interpretive journey through Browns Canyon National Monument. Designated a National Monument in 2015, this beautiful canyon is a wonderland of geology, ecology, and human history. If you have ever wanted to know the reason why a train runs along the Arkansas, who were the first pioneers of the area, how did the Sawatch Mountains form, why does the foliage change so drastically from one side of the valley to the other, then this is the trip for you!
Your trip will start at our Buena Vista Outpost, where you will be fitted with all necessary gear for your day on the river. While navigating the thrilling class III (and one class IV), Zack will provide wonderful insights into the canyon around you. Stops will be made in a few places, allowing for short hikes from the river to areas where the landscape will be explained by Zack. A fresh deli style lunch will be expertly prepared at one of the beautiful lunch sites in the Monument. You will return to the outpost sometime between 4 and 5 pm, depending on length of hikes and weather. While we do allow children as young as 7 on this stretch, Zack recommends this trip for adults and at the very least children over the age of 12. We recommend bringing footwear that is comfortable to wear in both the raft and on a short hike. We also ask that you kindly arrive 30 minutes before departure time.
If you would like to know more about Zack and what he does, he has a website and can be found on Instagram as well:
NOTE: Trips are limited to 6 people total per trip, so space is limited!
